چکیده

The study of realization of French uvular /ʁ/ is usually considered as problematic due to its variability. In this study, an articulatory (EMA) and aerodynamic experiment allowed us to determine its major axes of variation. We show that the degree of constriction between the tongue and the palate is related to the voicing of the consonant and we validate the use of a harmonic-to-noise ratio for the measurement of variation of /ʁ/. Aerodynamic data also show that the variation of Nasal Airflow is not significant but a ratio between Oral Airflow and IntraOral Pressure significantly varies according to the different realizations of /ʁ/. Subglottic Pressure only plays a significant role in specific cases. Finally, acoustic analyses of continuous speech based on results found in this study investigate prosodic factors of variation for the production of /ʁ/.

Perception and Production of Word-Final /ʁ/ in French

Variability of (French) /ʁ/ is a frequently studied phenomenon showing that /ʁ/ can have multiple realizations. In French, all these studies were undertaken using small read corpora and we have reason to believe that these corpora don't allow to look at the full picture. Indeed factors such as local word frequency, as well as speech rate can have almost as much influence as phonemic context in ...

Articulatory-acoustic relationships during vocal tract growth for French vowels: Analysis of real data and simulations with an articulatory model

This paper reports on the articulatory–acoustic relationships involved during vocal tract growth. Data were taken from a database of ten French vowels uttered by 15 speakers ranging in age from 3 years old to adulthood. Despite the important acoustic variation encountered, one feature is displayed by all the speakers: the production of extreme focal vowels /i/, /u/, /]/, and /y/, realized with ...

Place assimilation and articulatory strategies: the case of sibilant sequences in French as L1 and L2

This study focuses on how French heterosyllabic sibilant clusters are produced by one French native speaker and by three Italian learners of French-L2. In French, these clusters are frequent and are reported to show place assimilation; in Italian, on the contrary, they are very rare and speakers are expected to repair the phonotactically marked sequences by epenthesizing a schwa. In the current...

Articulatory overlap as a function of voicing in French and German consonant clusters.

The effects of laryngeal specification on the timing of supra-laryngeal articulations have so far received little attention. Previous research has shown that German-but not French-mixed-voicing clusters are produced with less articulatory overlap than phonologically fully voiced clusters. Articulatory and acoustic data of labial and velar stops as simple onsets and in stop + /l/ clusters are ex...

Virtual Talking Heads and audiovisual articulatory synthesis

Our approach to audiovisual articulatory synthesis involves the development of Virtual Talking Heads that integrate the articulatory, aerodynamic and acoustic phenomena underlying speech production. Specifically, these Talking Heads are faithful clones of the speakers whose data the various models are based on. Our contribution presents some of the results achieved at ICP in this domain: 3D oro...
